Strong Body, Strong Mind!
How Strength Training Can Support Women Through Menopause
The average life expectancy of a woman in the UK is 83. The average age of menopause is 51, with perimenopause hitting around the age of 45.
Therefore, (with a little luck, good genes & a healthy lifestyle on our side!) we can expect to live half of our adult life post menopause!!
So, it’s fairly safe to say that menopause is certainly not the beginning of the end! In fact, for many of us, we’re only halfway there!!
And that surely, is reason alone to make damn sure the second half is as vibrant, as healthy and as full of joy and happiness as hopefully the first half has been!
My mission, through my work as a Personal Trainer, Online Fitness Coach & Specialist in Exercise & Nutrition for Menopause, is to encourage all women to view this stage of life as a wonderful opportunity to embrace lifestyle changes and nurture our bodies and minds to shape and define how we age and thereby safeguard and prolong our future health.
And exercise is one of the biggest tools we have at our disposal when it comes to taking on the menopause with a spring in our step and a smile on our face!!
I’m under no illusions, as I navigate the final year of my 40’s, that menopause in all its glory, sucks!! Typically, it hits at an age where many of us have very little time for ourselves and are juggling layer upon layer of responsibility in the form of teenage kids, aging parents, career pressures and sadly quite often relationship challenges.
Throw into the mix, societal pressures leading us to believe we are old/past it/no longer youthfully attractive and it’s easy to see why menopause can be a difficult time for us emotionally.
And all of that before we’ve even begun to tackle all the bizarre and unpredictable physical symptoms thrown at us, thanks to our fluctuating hormones!
When we’re already dealing with so much, it can feel like an impossible mountain to climb, to contemplate introducing any kind of regular exercise into our lives. Yet exercise is pivotal in combating so many immediate and long-term menopausal symptoms. And in particular strength training!
One of the single most important things we can do to support our journey through menopause and promote longevity and healthy ageing is to retain and build muscle mass by incorporating strength training into our weekly exercise regime.
There is no arguing the science, research and factual evidence behind the far-reaching benefits of strength training when it comes to women’s health and fitness. However, so few of us actually engage in any form of strength or resistance training on a regular basis, preferring to go with the “cardio is best” approach!
Incorporating strength training into your exercise regime will raise your metabolism, burn fat, keep you strong and healthy, promote bone health, make you look amazing and boost your mood and reduce anxiety and depression.
